His rig has a bone which, when oriented to the left or the right, plays actions that make his face look side to side with out actually doing so. This is one example of the strength his rig has, and makes expressing his 2d style immensely easy.
On the topic of keyframes, his eyes take advantage of keyframes to blink, as well does it's mouth uses them to emote.
